Four people were injured and dozens were displaced by a three-alarm fire that broke out at an apartment building on Whipple Avenue near El Camino Real Monday evening. The structure fire was reported at 5:18 p.m. in the 1100 block of Whipple on May 25.
The fire at the 10-unit, three-story building took an hour to knock down, according to Redwood City Fire Department Deputy Chief Shon Buford.
At least four people were transported to the hospital with injuries, he said, and while some pets in the building escaped the fire, several others were found dead or are missing.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Buford.
By 7:40 p.m., some residents in nearby units were being allowed to return home.
Redwood City police sent out an alert at 6:49 p.m. advising the public to avoid Whipple Avenue between El Camino and Clinton Street, due to the fire investigation and then announced shortly before 10 p.m. that the road had been reopened.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story gave the name of a different apartment building and has been corrected.
