Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mary-Jane Strom, Interim CEO, Girl Scouts of Northern California

As we step into 2025, many of us are inspired to find ways to make a meaningful
difference—volunteering with Girl Scouts of Northern California offers a unique
opportunity to do just that. By becoming a troop leader, you can inspire and
empower the next generation of leaders while enriching your own life.

Why Become a Troop Leader?

Create a Lasting Impact

As a troop leader, you play a pivotal role in helping girls and gender-expansive youth
unlock their potential. From guiding them through challenges to celebrating their
achievements, you’ll teach practical skills like financial literacy, outdoor survival, and
teamwork. Troop leaders empower youth to step outside their comfort zones in a
safe environment, embrace leadership roles, and gain confidence. The joy of seeing
your troop grow and gain skills that last a lifetime is unparalleled.

Flexibility That Fits Your Life

Being a troop leader is adaptable to your lifestyle. Whether you can spare a few
hours a month or are ready for a regular commitment, there are opportunities that
suit your availability. For instance, during my time in college, I took on the role of a
2nd grade Brownie troop leader as part of a volunteer commitment required by my
school. My schedule was busy as a student-athlete, but I found that leading the
troop was a manageable and rewarding way to give back to my community. I
enjoyed planning meetings and working with the girls to explore their interests and
try out new activities—from arts and crafts to outdoor adventures. The flexibility
allowed me to balance my academic and athletic responsibilities while making a
meaningful impact.

You make a meaningful difference as a troop leader while balancing your other
commitments. You can organize meetings, lead badge-earning activities, or support
cookie season in ways that seamlessly fit into your life—one manageable piece at a
time.

Comprehensive Support and Training

Becoming a troop leader is a rewarding experience, and we’re here to help you
succeed every step of the way. Girl Scouts of Northern California provides
comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure you feel confident and
prepared. From workshops and online resources to mentorship opportunities with
experienced leaders, you’ll have access to the tools you need to lead with confidence.

Our community is here to guide and support you so you’re never alone in this
journey.

A Rewarding Experience

Troop leadership isn’t just about giving back. It’s also an opportunity for personal
growth and building connections. Volunteering provides a sense of purpose,
strengthens community ties, and allows you to learn alongside your troop. Plus,
you’ll create memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

Empower the Future of Leadership

As a troop leader, you’ll help Girl Scouts discover their passions, explore STEM,
practice entrepreneurship, and learn resilience. You’ll play a critical role in helping
them achieve their goals and grow into strong, confident leaders. Knowing that
you’ve influenced their journeys is a gratifying gift that keeps on giving.

Celebrate Your Impact

Girl Scouts of Northern California takes pride in recognizing its volunteers’ hard work
and dedication. Each fall, we honor the efforts of troop leaders and volunteers at
local recognition events. These celebrations are a testament to the positive change
you help create in your community.

Start the Year with Purpose

The new year is a perfect time to embrace meaningful goals. You’ll make a
difference in youth’s lives while also inspiring yourself to grow and thrive. Start 2025
