The drone show was far too short and lackluster for what probably could have been done for the budget that used to be used for fireworks. Additionally, I did not particularly enjoy the “logos” I can see on my utility bills as part of the show. Between the downturn of the parade, that used to be one of the finest in all the Bay Area, over the last few years and now the lousy drone show, I think I’ll search elsewhere for my 4th of July celebrations in the future.

Please, let’s return to traditional fireworks displays on July 4th and New Year’s Eve. Set off over the bay, they are fire-safe, and they rise high into the air to be visible from the peninsula’s hills. By disheartening contrast, the drone display this year was abysmal–not only was it silent and half as long as the usual fireworks displays, its “cookie cutter” configurations were boring and so small and low in the sky that they were unimpressive and indecipherable from Redwood City’s neighborhoods and hillside homes. Let’s resume traditional, lovely, dramatic fireworks displays that elicit “Oohs and aahs” all over our treasured peninsula!

Sadly, the long local history of celebrating major holidays with dazzling fireworks safely displayed over the port of Redwood City was broken this year with an abysmal drone display. The unusually brief, underwhelming program featured small, boring cookie-cutter configurations, deployed low in the air above the Port. Peninsula residents in the hills were unable to identify the small, silent shapes during the short program. This was not the celebration our residents deserve – let’s return to the tradition of dramatic, colorful, exciting fireworks of the past! Dump the drones!

  1. Firework shows are a multi-dimensional display of color, design, sound and full of anticipation between each volley. Each different in size, shape, color & sound. Just like us!
To citizens of this country, the explosive nature of fireworks also represent the struggles of an early nation whose inhabitants fought to replace tyranny with freedom. Francis Scott Key wrote our national anthem as war raged in Baltimore.. more on civics later.
The struggle continues as this magnificent experiment our founders, many in their 20s and 30s, was named the United States of America. The struggle of self determination continues even today on its messy journey of survival.

Drones are mechanical robots, Drones spell messages which, like a chalkboard, can only be read from the front… From the side, the message is an unintelligible wafer, from the rear, its spelled backwards. Can’t be understood from a distance from yards in the hills like fireworks. Drones are basicly exclusionary because from a distance they are not interesting. For that matter, being there is no better.

It’s a Crossroad people…. let those who spent $100k (about 7800 a minute) on your 13 minute advertising show, that it took you hours drive, walk in to get settled in your spot and longer to leave, just how you feel about sterile robots, a show which lasted less time than filling your tank at Costco replacing the surprise and magnificence of each volley of fireworks.

I for one, think drones are boring.. with messages like “Climate Best by Government Test” spelled backwards if I’m not on the grass with the crush of humanity and as I freeze my rear end off in cold wind at 9:30pm. I actually laughed out loud at the irony of the climate message scribed across the sky.

Glad I’ve seen more than half a hundred fireworks shows all around this beacon of hope, this amazing nation we call AMERICA. Don’t lose sight of the prize. You’re only here for a while
