Just after midnight last week, a 32-year-old woman was killed when a motorist struck her at the intersection of Woodside Road and Veterans Boulevard.

Redwood City police officers were dispatched to the scene on a report of a woman lying on the ground about 100 feet east of the intersection, according to a department press release.

The woman, Marialuisa Martinez Martinez, was unconscious and had no pulse. Officers performed CPR until medical personnel transported her to Stanford Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The crash occurred around 12:11 a.m. on Sept. 22.

A man walking with the woman told investigators he crossed ahead of her, then turned back and saw her get hit. He said he had entered the crosswalk with the signal and believed the light had not changed before the collision. They were crossing Woodside Road southbound from Veterans Boulevard, according to the report.

The driver, who was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, told police he was traveling east on Woodside Road toward Highway 101 and had entered the intersection on a green light. He said he pulled over after realizing he had struck a pedestrian.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said. His vehicle was towed as evidence.

The woman was later identified by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office as Marialuisa Martinez Martinez.

The Investigations Lt. Jeff Clements of Redwood City said the last vehicle-pedestrian fatal collision in the city was March 2, 2024, which was by a Caltrain just south of the Sequoia Station. The pedestrian was on the tracks for unknown reasons.

Police said they cannot release more information about the Sept. 22 crash while the case remains under investigation. They urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to call the department’s traffic unit at (650) 780-7100.
