The ACLU of Northern California presented its Defend Democracy Award to the Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County and its executive director, Evelyn “Evvy” Stivers, at a Sept. 15 event in Palo Alto.
The award recognized the group’s work on a Menlo Park housing and parking ballot measure and its broader advocacy for affordable housing in San Mateo County, according to an announcement from the housing group.
The presentation took place at Mitchell Park Community Center during the ACLU’s Defend Democracy Tour, which recognizes local organizations for work related to civil rights and democratic participation.
The ACLU also contributed $1,000 to support the housing group’s work, according to the announcement.
The Housing Leadership Council advocates for housing policies and works with local governments and community members on housing issues throughout the county.
