Moss wall workshop

Beneficial insects in the garden

Learn how to identify the beneficial insects that help keep garden pests in check during this presentation by Master Gardener Candace Simpson. The workshop will cover how to recognize these “natural enemies,” distinguish them from common garden pests and create a garden that supports them, along with other strategies for managing insect pests. Infrared assistive listening systems will be available; ask library staff for assistance.
Seating is limited, but walk-ins are welcome.
Integrated pest management workshop

Learn the basics of eco-friendly pest control during this hands-on workshop at the East Palo Alto Community Garden. Urban agriculture and environmental education consultant Rob Bennaton will cover pest identification, diagnosing garden problems and techniques for preventing and managing common pests. Participants will tour the community garden, examine real-world examples and take home a pocket magnifying glass and a beneficial predators identification poster.

Growing cool-season vegetables

Learn how to start seedlings for a fall vegetable garden with UC Master Gardener Laura Westley. This workshop will cover cool-season crops that thrive in Santa Clara County, including greens, cruciferous vegetables and root crops. Westley will share tips on soil, watering and fertilizing needs, along with the basics of growing a successful cool-season garden.

Insider’s garden tour at Filoli

Go behind the scenes at Filoli with a 90-minute guided tour led by a member of the estate’s horticulture team. ‘Garden-to-Glass: A Summer Mocktail Experience’

Cimate change and the Bay marsh

Explore the wetlands of Ravenswood Open Space Preserve on this 2-mile guided Bay Trail walk with docent naturalists Bobbie Riedel and Melissa Hero. Learn how native marsh plants and wildlife have adapted to the Bay’s challenging conditions, how climate change is affecting local wetlands and shoreline habitats, and what agencies are doing to help protect these ecosystems. Meet at the Ravenswood parking area at the end of Bay Road.

Growing Flowers in Santa Clara County

While the Peninsula Rose Society’s monthly educational programs and workshops are on summer break in July and August, volunteers are still welcome to help care for the Catherine Brennan Rose Garden. Meet fellow gardeners, learn from experienced rosarians and lend a hand maintaining the garden. Volunteer days are held the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
