Redwood City officials will consider nearly $13 million in new funding for two affordable housing projects during a housing-focused City Council meeting on Monday, May 11.
The funding would support Rise City Apartments, a proposed 94-unit affordable housing project at 1304 Middlefield Road, and a 79-unit MidPen Housing project at 1580 Maple St. Together, the projects could add up to 170 affordable homes in Redwood City.
The meeting, which the city is calling “Housing Night,” comes during Affordable Housing Month and includes several housing-related items. The council will consider regulations and appeal guidelines for the city’s Tenant Protection Ordinance, which took effect Jan. 1 and includes minimum lease terms, just-cause eviction protections, and relocation assistance requirements.
Council members will also consider the city’s 2026 Community Development Block Grant Action Plan, which includes $777,639 in recommended funding for shelters, fair housing services, domestic violence services, home repair programs, microenterprise assistance and Habitat for Humanity’s Home Preservation Loan Program.
The council will also discuss whether to move forward with studying affordable housing redevelopment at Downtown Library Parking Lot B, a city-owned lot at 1016 Middlefield Road. A feasibility study found the site could support 70 to 104 affordable homes while preserving public parking and including limited office space for city use.
On the consent calendar, the council will consider amendments to the city’s Affordable Housing Preservation Program and adoption of an ordinance establishing an entertainment zone on part of Broadway.
The council will also consider authorizing the city to raise and display the FIFA World Cup 26 flag as part of a regional “30 Days to Kickoff” event May 12. The flag would remain up during the tournament, from June 11 to July 19, 2026. City staff said Redwood City has secured a viewing license for public watch parties on Courthouse Square and is preparing other downtown activations.
The meeting begins at 6 p.m. May 11 at City Hall, 1017 Middlefield Road. Community members may attend in person or virtually.
