Redwood City Deputy City Manager Jennifer Yamaguma has been appointed assistant city manager for the City of San Mateo.
San Mateo City Manager Alex Khojikian announced the appointment on Wednesday. Yamaguma will start on June 8, replacing Christina Horrisberger, who is retiring on June 2.
Yamaguma currently oversees key functions in Redwood City, including City Council relations, communications, economic development, real estate, legislative affairs and strategic initiatives.
She has more than 25 years of experience in local government leadership across the Peninsula, with executive leadership, strategic communications, policy implementation and organizational management, according to San Mateo.
“Jennifer is known for fostering collaboration and building consensus within departments and in the communities she serves,” Khojikian said in a statement. “Her ability to navigate complex policy and community issues, and to build strong relationships with elected officials, staff, partners and community stakeholders leaves a lasting impact.”
Before serving as deputy city manager in Redwood City, she led the city’s Communications Division, where she expanded communications and community engagement efforts and advised executive leadership on high-profile and sensitive issues.
Her previous experience includes leadership roles with the Cities of Santa Clara and Milpitas, such as assistant to the city manager, acting city clerk and assistant city clerk, community relations manager and public information officer. She also served as the city’s lead public information officer for Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium.
The news of Yamaguma’s impending departure follows another recent leadership change in Redwood City. Longtime Parks Director Derek Wolfgram was named assistant city manager last week. Wolfgram started in this new role on Monday.
