Redwood City is testing a new way to bring people downtown this summer: allowing visitors to sip alcoholic drinks in designated public spaces on Broadway.
The city has announced the first three dates for its new Entertainment Zone, a pilot program that will pair outdoor drinking with live music, games and “new downtown experiences,” according to the city. One of the activations will coincide with World Cup festivities.
“Downtown Redwood City is already one of the Peninsula’s most vibrant public spaces,” said Mayor Elmer Martínez Saballos. “The Entertainment Zone gives us another way to support local businesses, bring people together and create a welcoming experience on Broadway.”
Visitors 21 and older will be able to buy alcohol from participating businesses and drink it in designated cups within the zone, which covers part of the Broadway Pedestrian Mall and a stretch along Redwood Creek. Outside the zone, alcohol will not be allowed, and drinks cannot be taken out of it.
The first three events are scheduled for Thursday, June 11, from 3 to 5 p.m.; Saturday, June 20, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.; and Saturday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The July 18 event will serve as a lead-in to Soccer on the Square, a World Cup third-place match watch party at Courthouse Square.
The City Council approved the Entertainment Zone on May 11. It covers the 2000 block of Broadway between Jefferson Avenue and Main Street, and along Redwood Creek from Broadway to the Main Street parking lot.
The city said the zone will only be active during special events between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The first three pilot activations, the city stated, are part of a broader effort to support Redwood City’s downtown vitality, to encourage foot traffic and to create new opportunities to enjoy public spaces.
