The driver of the Ford pickup that was involved in the death of a 36-year-old man on Woodside Road on Tuesday was arrested and booked into the Redwood City jail.
Lazaro Gregorio Chacajlux, 32, was arrested on suspicion of a hit-and-run resulting in death and gross vehicular manslaughter. Police said that while the victim was trying to stop the driver from fleeing the crash, he fell and was run over.
The victim was Arturo Cervantes Romero, according to a complaint filed through the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
The crash occurred shortly before 8 p.m. at the 800 block of Woodside Road. Redwood City police said the man was a passenger in a Jeep traveling southbound on Hudson Street when a white Ford pickup truck leaving an alley near the Shell gas station sideswiped the Jeep.
The Jeep pulled over following the collision to exchange information, but the Ford continued westbound on Woodside Road, according to police.
While the Ford was stopped in traffic, the victim left the Jeep and attempted to stop the fleeing pickup truck by grabbing onto it, police said. Chacajlux accelerated while the victim held onto the vehicle, leading the victim to fall from the truck and get run over, dying at the scene.
A police drone located the abandoned Ford and seized it as evidence. Chacajlux surrendered to Redwood City Police investigators on Wednesday, leading to his arrest and booking into the San Mateo County Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death and gross vehicular manslaughter.
While the crash remains under investigation, the Redwood City Police Department thanks community members who came forward.
