While vote counts for the Redwood City rent control measure, Measure E, have budged only a few percentage points since election night, supporters continue to keep the faith that the measure could prevail.
The measure, which would add stricter rent control, with increases capped at 5%, and expand tenant protections, still appears to be failing with just 43.89%, or 7,466 votes, according to the latest report filed at around 4:30 p.m. Friday by the San Mateo County Elections Office. Just over 56% of the vote, or 9,544 votes, are against Measure E.
“We won’t know for sure until the final count,” said Clara Jaeckel, a Faith in Action member, who has donated $2,600 to Yes on E. “What this campaign has shown is that there is a really strong need that is not being met in Redwood City for people to have safe and affordable and dignified places to live.”
Almost 24,000 ballots in Redwood City were returned, which leaves up to nearly 7,000 votes to be counted, according to elections office figures.
Should the measure fail, Jaeckel said “the work will continue,” though she’s not sure what form that might take.
