Spaghetti with Sam Reider
Pianist and accordionist Sam Reider presents “Spaghetti” at the Stanford Jazz Festival this year. A San Francisco native, Reider blends jazz and folk tunes with contemporary composition, often engaging in cross-cultural musical collaborations; he has served as a musical ambassador for the U.S. Department of State in various countries like China, Laos and Turkey, according to his website. The Stanford Jazz Workshop, which hosts the Stanford Jazz Festival, describes Spaghetti as a “genre-defying musical journey.” The performance will feature Jim Campilongo on guitar, Scott Amendola on drums, and Mat Muntz on the bass.
July 13, 7:30 p.m., at Campbell Recital Hall, 541 Lasuen Mall, Stanford; $10-$47, stanfordjazz.org.
Black Olive Jazz
Kay Kostopoulos knows something about stage presence: Bay Area audiences have seen her as an actress, singer and dancer on stages from the North Bay to the Peninsula. She also directs and teaches acting, voice, speech and Shakespeare in the Department of Theater and Continuing Studies Program at Stanford University. She brings an inviting sense of showmanship to concerts with veteran jazz musician Noel Jewkes with a repertoire that runs the gamut of the jazz canon, from swing and standards to blues and Latin, as well as original songs. Now based in New York, she has returned to the Peninsula for a show with Jewkes on saxophone at Meyhouse. As Black Olive Jazz, the duo Incorporates Mediterranean musical influences into their sound, drawing on undulating phrases on the saxophone, with Kostopoulos playing finger cymbals during some numbers.
July 11, 5 and 8 p.m. (5 p.m. show has a waitlist), Meyhouse Palo Alto, 640 Emerson St., Palo Alto. meyhousejazz.com.
