The Redwood City Improvement Association, in partnership with Fung Collaboratives, will unveil a new public art installation at the Art Kiosk titled “Shadows & Light, the Legacy of Guernica” by Mexican artist Fernando Escartiz.
The display will be open to the public at the Art Kiosk in front of Courthouse Square through July 21.
Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s cubist painting “Guernica,” the installation depicts the horrors of war and the resilience of the human spirit.

The installation serves as a stark portrayal of the devastation caused by warfare, highlighting the profound human suffering and loss it brings. Escartiz aims to remind viewers that innocent people often bear the brunt of conflict.
His work is rooted in the realm of memory, driven by a desire to prevent the recurrence of human extermination. Amid the darkness, symbols of truth and hope emerge, reflecting the resilience of the human spirit.
Escartiz draws inspiration from his travels and observations of the world. In this installation, he acknowledges the daily horrors faced by innocent civilians in war zones. Following Picasso’s legacy, Escartiz delivers a poignant commentary on the impact of conflict and the enduring strength of humanity.
This marks Escartiz’s third exhibition at the Art Kiosk, following his 2019 installation “The Dream” and his 2021 installation “We Are Stardust.” The rotation of exhibits in 2024 is part of the Redwood City Improvement Association’s ongoing effort to enhance the community’s fine art scene for residents and visitors.
