Redwood City’s North Star Academy is taking students—and soon audiences—on an epic journey from the familiar halls of middle school to the world of hobbits, dwarves, and dragons. On Friday, Nov. 15, 35 students from grades 4 through 8 will bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic tale, The Hobbit, to life in Patricia Gray’s stage adaptation, the only one officially authorized by Tolkien himself.

For 12 weeks, the young cast has rehearsed to recreate the fantastical landscapes of Bag-End, the Misty Mountains, and the Lonely Mountain, where the infamous dragon Smaug awaits. Under the direction of Gary Gerber, audiences can expect action-packed battles, heartfelt songs, and the timeless themes of bravery and growth, told through a gender-neutral cast that gives each student a role to shine in.
“My favorite thing about ‘The Hobbit’ in general is that it’s a deep story about growth and learning what one is truly capable of, masquerading as a fantasy about loveable critters and creatures. It’s fun to create a show that resonates on both levels,” Gerber said.
The production, running from Nov. 15 to Nov. 17 at the McKinley Theater, 400 Duane Street, offers four performances for Redwood City residents and Tolkien enthusiasts alike. Readers who purchase tickets before Sunday, Nov. 10, can use the code “MATBOGO” for a buy-one-get-one-free offer. For details, visit nsahobbit.com.
