Police officers arrested a woman in Redwood City on Friday, April 19, after an extensive chase in which she allegedly stole a tow truck, rammed police cars, collided with another vehicle, burglarized an occupied home and assaulted her boyfriend, according to the Redwood City Police Department.

Officers ultimately took the 35-year-old Monterey resident into custody in the parking lot outside Planet Fitness in Redwood City. She faces felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon, failure to yield, vehicle theft, residential burglary, domestic violence, resisting arrest and committing a felony while out on bail, according to a Redwood City Police Department press release.

During the arrest, a Redwood City officer deployed his police dog, who bit the suspect on the hip, according to the release. She received treatment at San Mateo County Hospital for hip and leg injuries, before being medically cleared and booked into Maguire Correctional Facility, the release said.

The incident began at 6:03 p.m., when Redwood City police responded to a report that a woman had just stolen a tow truck from Enterprise Rent-a-Car. An officer found the truck parked in the Jack in the Box parking lot in San Carlos and tried to stop the suspect as she re-entered the truck.

The suspect “proceeded to repeatedly ram” police vehicles, pushing one through the parking lot and causing “major damage.” According to the release, an officer was injured when the suspect hit his vehicle. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

The truck fled towards U.S. Highway 101, traveling 80-90 mph in the southbound direction, the release said. A Redwood City officer pursued, before California Highway Patrol was requested to respond.

Menlo Park police also responded and caught up with the suspect at the junction of 101 and State Route 85, at which point, the tow truck “veered across the roadway colliding with another motorist before continuing to flee,” according to police.

Redwood City and Menlo Park officers ended their pursuit, according to police. The other driver was uninjured, the release said.

According to the release, a CHP officer was attempting to pass the tow truck when the driver abruptly braked, leading the CHP officer to collide into the tow truck, disabling the patrol car.

Law enforcement determined there was a GPS tracker on the truck, and Redwood City officers used it to track the suspect’s movements. She parked on the 1000 block of Silver Hill Road in Redwood City, where she allegedly burglarized a home with a nanny and children inside, the release said.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene to deploy spike strips and a drone was requested from the Redwood City Fire Department. Despite these efforts, the individual in the tow truck managed to flee again. It’s unclear from the Redwood City Police Department’s press release whether authorities were able to deploy the spike strips or how the suspect managed to flee. A police spokesperson has not yet responded to requests for comment.

San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies pursued the truck into downtown Redwood City but terminated the pursuit because the GPS tracker was providing updates on the truck’s location, the release said.

The GPS showed the truck stopped near the Sports Basement. Redwood City emergency dispatchers received 9-1-1 calls from the nearby Planet Fitness.

The suspect assaulted and injured her boyfriend inside the Planet Fitness, where he works, the release said.

Law enforcement “converged” on the tow truck in the parking lot and attempted to detain the suspect, who was uncooperative, the release said.

“Given the unbelievably high risk (the suspect) posed to the public as well as law enforcement, Officers on scene needed to use all resources at their disposal to keep her from getting back into the tow truck,” the release said. “An RCPD Officer deployed his canine partner who bit (the suspect) on her hip. (She) stopped resisting at this time and was taken into custody.”

The suspect was out on bail from a domestic violence case the previous week and had been arrested four days before for a residential burglary in Redwood City, the release said.

Redwood City police are asking anyone with information on the case to call the department at 650-780-7100.
