East Palo Alto police launched a homicide investigation after an officer found a resident with a fatal wound on April 8 near the intersection of Newell Road and West Bayshore Road, according to a Police Department news release.

Police located the victim on Monday morning after a community member flagged down an officer at about 11 a.m. and directed him to assist an injured person. Upon arriving, the officer found the man with a fatal wound, though officers were initially unable to determine the cause of the injury and were unable to determine if a crime occurred, according to the news release.

According to the department, the incident was treated as a homicide until proven otherwise, consistent with the county’s homicide protocol. On April. 9, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy on the victim and determined that the source of the wound is criminal in nature, police said.

Police identified the man as Leonard Clark, a 54-year-old resident of East Palo Alto. He is the city’s second murder victim in 2024.

The department is asking the community for assistance and the nonprofit Mothers Against Murder has offered a $10,000 reward for information, received within the next 90 days, that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the murder, according to the news release.

Anyone with information is asked to Detective Salvador Perez at 650-660-2653. Anonymous tips can be sent by email to epa@tipnow.opg, by text to 650-409-6792 and by voice mail at 650-409-6792.
