UPDATE, AUG. 14: The San Mateo County Coroner's Office has identified the deceased person as Emmett Herschel Barnes III, 41 years old, residence unknown.
 

A pedestrian died after they were struck by a southbound train near Whipple Avenue on Tuesday, Aug. 8, Caltrain spokesman Dan Lieberman said in a statement.

The incident occurred at 12:30 p.m. and involved the #116 train. Emergency personnel were on the scene, and train service was stopped in the area. 
Tracks in both directions were reopened as of 2:30 p.m., according to an update. Approximately 75 passengers were on board, and no other injuries were reported. 

Transit Police are investigating the incident. Lieberman said that the final cause of death and identification of the person will be determined by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office.

"No matter what the circumstances, it is always regrettable when a life is lost. Caltrain reminds everyone to be safe around train tracks," Caltrain said in a final statement about the incident.

This is Caltrain's eighth fatality of the year, Lieberman said.
