Local residents who died recently include:
Joy Swift, 93, a Palo Alto resident who was born in Oklahoma, who moved to San Francisco at 18, who found a community at the 17th Street Church of Christ, who worked in sales and personnel and who was a talented fiber and fabric artist, who helped found the Palo Alto Church of Christ, who taught at the Sierra Bible Camp, who led the Southbay Storytellers and Listeners group, and who firmly believed that everyone needed at least three hugs a day, died on July 14, 2026.
James Regel, 83, a Menlo Park resident who was born in Spokane, Washington, who graduated from Woodside High School, who received a master’s degree in business from U.C. Berkeley and who then attended Officer Candidate School, where he was commissioned an officer of the U.S. Navy, who served on board the U.S. Hancock, an aircraft carrier, in the South Pacific during the Vietnam War, who then began a career in technology, bringing his expertise to Veralink, Rolm, IBM and other companies, who supported Israel and global Christian ministries, and who loved watching sports and playing tennis and golf, died on July 14, 2026.
Gail Gavello, 84, a Menlo Park resident who was a member of the Junior League, Peninsula Volunteers and Kiwanis Club, who involved in her family’s real estate business, which developed and managed properties throughout California and who made trips to Torino, Italy, as part of her research into her family roots, died on July 20, 2026.
George Norbeck, 89, a Woodside resident who was born in South Dakota, who received his medical degree from University of Minnesota and master’s degree at UCLA, who proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and in the Air National Guard, who served as a psychiatrist at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center, who was recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association for his contributions to psychiatry, who joined the San Mateo Mounted Patrol and who loved singing in choirs and performing in musical theater, died on July 24, 2026.
