Redwood City Mayor Elmer Martínez Saballos joined volunteers outside Maguire Correctional Facility on Friday night to monitor possible immigration enforcement activity and ensure county restrictions were being followed.
Martínez Saballos said he arrived after reports that transfers were happening and federal agents had shown up. He said the county’s ordinance bars ICE agents from staging on county property for immigration enforcement, including the space in front of the jail.
He described the gathering as “just being here for our neighbors, letting them know about the resources that are out here.”
Redwood City Council member Chris Sturken said volunteers, including clergy, were supporting people being released from the jail. Two people he identified as ICE agents had been outside earlier and refused his requests to show their badges and a warrant, he said.
The gathering comes amid debate over the county’s non-cooperation with ICE, an ordinance that has been in place since 2023. A Sheriff’s Office report showed that none of ICE’s 1,666 requests to the county jail and probation department from March 2025 through September 2026 were acted upon.
Supervisors voted Oct. 20 to seek additional data on criminal convictions among people named in ICE requests, drawing opposition from residents concerned it could weaken the policy. The vote did not change the county’s ordinance.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
