Stanford University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating a shooting threat that someone called in at about 12:40 p.m. on Friday afternoon, according to the university.

According to an alert from the department, an individual called the non-emergency phone at the Palo Alto dispatch center to state that he was at the campus entrance and intended to commit a shooting. Department personnel responded immediately to the area and have been evaluating the veracity of the call, according to the alert.

The university noted that it is issuing an alert out of an “abundance of caution” and it asked anyone who observes suspicious activity to immediately call 9-1-1.

At 3:14 p.m. the university issued an update stating the Department of Public Safety had “no additional information that lends credibility to the threat of a shooting on campus.”

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
