Motorists on U.S. Route 101 will experience lane closures for nine weekends from June to October as Caltrans rehabilitates pavement on sections of the freeway.
Caltrans has announced that these closures will take place to support faster construction on the State Highway Operation and Protection Plan project.
The closures will specifically affect the sections of the freeway bordering East Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Redwood City, from the San Mateo/Santa Clara County line to near where the freeway crosses Whipple Avenue.
Each closure will take place on the weekends and last for 55 hours. During the 55-hour closures, only one lane, the lane closest to the median, will be closed. There will be no impact on the express lanes because the weekend construction hours are outside the express lanes’ operating hours.
The closures will start around 10:00 p.m. on Friday night and last until approximately 5:00 a.m. Monday morning. The first of these nine closures is scheduled to begin this Friday, June 28. The specific weekends for the other closures will be announced soon.
In addition to rehabilitating pavement along this section of U.S. Route 101, the project will upgrade the median barrier, replace loop detectors, update striping and install new rumble strips and signage.
Caltrans advised, “expect delays during weekend closures.” Alternative modes of transportation and routes are encouraged.
