An eight-story apartment complex could replace a cluster of businesses at the corner of El Camino Real and Madison Avenue, including Happy Donuts, The King Mattress and Furniture and The Record Man.

Mecah Ventures, a private real estate development firm based in Menlo Park, has submitted plans for a 126-unit rental housing project at 1330 El Camino Real, less than a mile from downtown Redwood City. The city lists the project as a planning application submittal, with no public meetings scheduled.

The project would include 30 studios, 56 one-bedroom apartments and 40 two-bedroom apartments. Of those, 26 units are affordable , split into three categories, very low, low and moderate, with six, seven and 13 apartments respectively.

The nearly 98-foot-tall building would rise above the 50-foot height limit listed under Redwood City’s Downtown Precise Plan. The developer is seeking zoning waivers for height, open space, bicycle parking, frontage and other development standards.

Plans call for 124 vehicle parking spaces and 54 bicycle parking spaces on a 26,554-square-foot lot.

Premier Properties, a Palo Alto-based commercial real estate firm, began pursuing the project about seven years ago, which was set to include 130 units in a 6-story building.

The timeline for the construction of these revised plans has not yet been made available.
