The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings as a winter storm brings heavy rain, strong winds, and hazardous surf to the Bay Area and Central Coast on Monday and Tuesday.

A high surf warning is in effect through noon Tuesday, with breaking waves of 30 to 35 feet and up to 40 feet at Mavericks. Rough seas, rip currents, sneaker waves, and coastal flooding are expected. The NWS urges beachgoers to stay out of the water, avoid piers and jetties, and never turn their backs on the ocean.

“Being in or too close to the water will be very dangerous over the next week or so,” the agency said.

Rainfall could reach up to three inches in Sonoma and Marin counties, raising flood concerns. Winds exceeding 35 mph are likely Tuesday, especially along the coast. Isolated thunderstorms are also forecast across the Bay Area and Central Coast.

Hazardous marine conditions will persist through Christmas Day, though the weather is expected to be dry and partially sunny. Residents are advised to adjust travel plans and prioritize safety during this severe weather event.
